Customs detectives have detained a man with over 16 kilograms of gold bars at Baitul Muklarram Market in the capital.

A team of customs detectives took position in the market in the afternoon following a tip-off that a man might come with the gold haul, Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate chief Moinul Khan said.

Bangladesh Jewellers Samity or Bajus representatives assisted the officials of CIID to detain Rabiul Islam, 24, Saturday evening, the directorate's chief told bdnews24.com.

The CIID director general said the market price of the seized gold - 140 bars of 116 grams each - is estimated to be around Tk 80 million.

"The jewellery shopkeepers informed Bajus when the man arrived. Later, the customs detectives and Bajus representatives identified the person and detained him," he added.

Khan said Rabiul told the CIID that he hails from Cox's Bazar. He tried to establish a garment shop on a pavement during Ramadan last year but left the business as the profit was not much, the man told the customs detectives.

One 'Akash' had asked Rabiul to carry the gold to any shop in the market, and he would be paid Tk 10,000 for this job, Rabiul to CIID detective at the initial investigation.
