Faisal Hasan, a spokesman of the cultural affairs ministry, confirmed the decision on Saturday, citing State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid.
"The minister [KM Khalid] is out of Dhaka. He has asked me to relay the decision. Considering the situation that has arisen, the book fair will come to an end on April 12 before the full lockdown takes effect," he said.
"The book fair was scheduled to continue until Apr 14, the first day of Bengali New Year. The government decided to close it on Apr 12 considering the current COVID-19 situation,” Bangla Academy Secretary AHM Lokman said, adding that the authorities are yet to issue a notice on the matter.
The fair that usually runs for the entire month of February began belatedly on Mar 18 due to the pandemic. The visiting hours for the book fair have already been changed several times.
The government plans to enforce another seven-day lockdown with stricter rules from Apr 14 with the offices shut, as coronavirus cases keep surging across Bangladesh.
