The Rapid Action Battalion or RAB has killed a suspect in a gunfight during an anti-drug drive in Chattogram’s Muradpur.

Four members of the elite police unit were also injured in the drive as the suspects opened fire from a car stopped at a check post at Bibir Hat Rail Gate area on Thursday midnight, the RAB said.

One of the suspects died on the spot while another fled after the law enforcers retaliated, RAB-7 Commander Lt Col Mifta Uddin Ahmed said.

Locals identified the dead suspect as Asim Roy Babu, 40, from Banshkhali and said he was involved with Juba League, the youth front of the ruling Awami League.

He contested in the last city corporation election as an independent councillor candidate of ward no. 31 at Al Koron, they said.

The RAB said Asim was a drug trader and had three cases against him on drug offence charges at Kotwali Police Station.
