Winners of microentrepreneurship awards announced

Citi Group has recognised 14 microentrepreneurs in six categories this year for contributing to society and economic progress.

Citi Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Citigroup, sponsored the programme.

The winners of the 12th Citi Microentrepreneurship Awards received the awards at a ceremony on Saturday with Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal present as the chief guest.

The best microentrepreneur of the year was Md Zillur Rahman Chowdhury from Naogaon, with Md Saiduzzaman Sarkar from Bogra as the first runner-up and Md Azijul Hoque Sikder from Barguna as the second runner-up.

They received Tk450,000, Tk150,000 and Tk100,000 in addition to crests and certificates.

Ruma Akter from Munshiganj was awarded as the best woman microentrepreneur of the year. Fazilatunnesa from Dhaka and Rubana Sharmin from Chittagong stood first and second runners-up. The winners received Tk350,000, Tk150,000 and Tk100,000 respectively.

Those honoured as the best youth microentrepreneurs of the year are Md Rubel Dewan from Savar (Tk350,000), Rahima Khatun from Gaibandha (Tk150,000) and Md Taifur Rahman Raju from Pabna (Tk100,000).

Saima Khatun from Satkhira finished as the best micro-entrepreneur of the year in agriculture and received Tk350,000. Md Altaf Hossain from Dinajpur and Md Nurul Amin from Shariatpur emerged as first and second runners-up bagging Tk150,000 and Tk100,000.

Peoples Oriented Programme Implementation was honoured as the best microfinance institution while Village Education Resource Centre became ‘the most innovative microfinance institution.’
