The government has asked factory owners, including garment entrepreneurs, to pay Eid-ul-Azha bonuses to workers by Aug 16.

State Minister for Labour and Employment Mujibul Haque shared the information following a meeting of a ‘core committee on crisis management’ to discuss the overall situation in garment factories and other factories on Thursday.

Salary for the month of July should be paid to the workers by Aug 10 and bonus by Aug 16, said the state minister. The current salary should be paid by Aug 19, he told reporters.

The workers should be given time-off in phases, following a customary system, said Haque adding there was no dissatisfaction among the workers as all previous decisions taken in the meetings during the Eid-ul-Fitr were implemented properly and in time.

“A garment factory had shut down without paying the workers before the Eid; later the government spoke to the owners and arranged payment to the workers.”

There has been no agitation during the Eid-ul-Fitr and will not happen this time too, Haque said.
