“Given the high price of 4G devices and relatively low penetration of such devices in the ecosystem, this is a notable achievement for the company,” it said in a media release to announce the accomplishment on Wednesday.
Bangladesh introduced the fourth generation or 4G mobile telephony services in February.
Followed by rapid coverage expansion by the operators, the introduction of 4G ushered in a new era of digitalisation in the country with a promise to provide the people with high-speed internet while on the go.
“We are humbled by the trust that the customers placed on our network and services. We are always committed to maintaining the high standards and bring the best for our customers,” Grameenphone’s Deputy CEO and CMO, Yasir Azman, said.
Ookla, the global internet testing and analysis firm, has acknowledged Grameenphone as the fastest network in Bangladesh, according to Azman.
Grameenphone is also the first operator in Bangladesh to introduce mobile internet and take it around the country, the release said.
Currently, over 36 million GP customers use the internet in its network, making it the single largest internet service provider in this part of the world, according to the release.
“While rolling out the 4G network we focused on quality rather than quantity, aiming to provide the best 4G experience to our valued customers,” Azman said.
Grameenphone is continuously expanding its 4G coverage around the country while maintaining the promised quality, he added.
Customers can check whether their SIMs are 4G enabled by dialling *121*3232#.
If not, they are requested to replace their existing SIMs to get 4G-enabled SIMs from their nearest SIM replacement points or Grameenphone Centers.
They will also need a 4G-enabled handset to enjoy the 4G services.
The customers will get 5GB free internet with seven days’ validity upon conversion to 4G, according to the release.
