Bangladesh ride on Tamim, Liton tons to sweep Zimbabwe aside as captain Mashrafe bows out

Openers Tamim Iqbal and Liton Das have shattered records in guiding a clinical Bangladesh to whitewash Zimbabwe 3-0 in the ODI series with a commanding win to bring the curtain down on Mashrafe Bin Mortaza’s captaincy in a grand fashion.

The Tigers bundled Zimbabwe out for 218 in 37.3 overs to bag the 123-run win in D/L method in the rain-shortened match at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Friday.

All the Bangladesh players then wore the No.2 jersey of Mashrafe with “Thank You Captain” written on the front as fans raised banners and posters showering the skipper with love.

Zimbabwe never really got going in their chase after Mashrafe struck in the first over to take out Tinashe Kamunhukamwe.

Sikandar Raza (61 off 50) tried to put up a fight but the visitors could manage only small partnerships as the bowlers continued to chip away with the wickets.

Mohammad Saifuddin was the pick of the Bangladesh bowlers with a haul of four.      

Liton smashed 176, the highest by a Bangladeshi in ODIs, in a record stand of 292 with the other centurion Tamim to amass 322 for 3 after rain shortened the game to 43 overs a side.   

Tamim congratulated Liton with a hug in the 40th over when the latter broke the record of 158 runs Tamim had set in the previous match two days ago.

Liton hit 16 boundaries and 8 sixes in the 143-ball innings before he was out in the 41st over. It was his second century of the series after he had scored 126 firing the hosts to their biggest win by a run margin of 169 in the first match.

Tamim remained unbeaten on 128 off 109 with 7 fours and 6 sixes. Mahmudullah and Afif Hossain played 4 balls each before they were out. Carl Mumba claimed all 3 wickets.

Earlier, Zimbabwe won the toss and put Bangladesh into bat in the dead rubber.

The Tigers made four changes to the line-up. Mohammad Naim and Afif were drafted in to play their first game of the series while Saifuddin and Mustafizur Rahman returned after being rested in the previous match.

Najmul Hossain Shanto, Shafiul Islam and Al-Amin Hossain missed out while Mushfiqur Rahim was rested. Liton kept the wicket in Mushfiqur’s place.
