Dhaka court grants bail to singer Asif Akbar

Singer Asif Akbar who landed in jail in a music piracy case four days ago has secured bail from a Dhaka court.

On June 5, he was arrested over a case under the Information and Communication Technology or ICT Act filed by lyricist, composer and singer Shafiq Tuhin a week ago.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Keshab Roy Chowdhury passed the interim bail order on Monday in response to Asif's petition.

The interim bail will remain valid until the submission of the investigation report, Asif's lawyer Omar Faruque told The singer has to pay Tk 10,000 for the bail.

“We could have filed the same complaint against the plaintiff Shafiq Tuhin much before,” Faruque said.

Faruque presented various screenshots of Facebook conversations between Asif and Shafiq as evidence in court.

Asif was arrested from his studio in Dhaka’s BFDC area on June 6. Apart from Akbar, four unidentified people have also been accused in the case filed with the Tejgaon Police Station on June 4.

According to the case, Asif has been accused of digitally pirating and selling at least 617 songs of various artists as mobile phone contents without their permission. More than 100 songs were written by Tuhin.
