Facing huge criticism from politicians and actions by authorities, Bangladeshi actor Ferdous Ahmed has apologised for “inadvertently” joining the election campaign of a Trinamool Congress candidate in India’s West Bengal.

India on Tuesday cancelled his visa and blacklisted him for joining election campaign in the country despite being a foreign national.

The rivals of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress party, especially the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, criticised Ferdous sharply after videos and photos of him in the campaign emerged.

In a statement sent to on Wednesday after returning home the previous night, Ferdous said he understood that it was a “mistake” to take part in election campaign of another country despite being a foreigner.

He said he had been “driven by emotion from the love of the people of West Bengal” when he had joined the campaign along with his Indian co-actors.

“I apologise for my inadvertent mistake. I hope everyone will forgive me,” he said.
