The ruling Awami League's central committee has instructed lower-tier committees not to directly expel party members on disciplinary grounds.

District, city, Upazila, and municipality-level committees will not dissolve any local AL committees directly either, the party’s General Secretary Obaidul Quader said on Friday.

He said the party sent out letters to all units throughout the country informing them of the organisational decision on Wednesday.

Quader made the decision public while addressing a press briefing over the upcoming council of Mahila Awami League at the Dhanmondi party office in Dhaka.

He said a suggestion must be sent to the central committee first to have a party member expelled before the committee takes a final decision on it.

“In addition, a committee can’t be dissolved instantly. If a recommendation is sent to the associated central committee joint secretary and organising secretary, the leaders in charge will raise the matter at the central committee and give their opinions.

“The central committee will then make assessments and give the decision on dissolution or expulsion.”
