The government has made a ‘cruel joke’ on the release and treatment of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, her party has alleged.

BNP leader Ruhul Kabir Rizvi made the allegation at a news briefing in Dhaka on Monday.

“The statements made by Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and Awami League Joint-General Secretary Mahbub-ul Alam Hanif over the release of the country’s leader on parole for treatment were contradictory,” he said.

"So, it can easily be concluded that they were making cruel jokes.”

Khaleda, who has been serving a 17-year prison sentence for corruption since February last year, is currently undergoing treatment at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University hospital.

She has recently been shifted to the hospital from the old central jail in Old Dhaka.

BNP leaders have long been demanding the release of their 74-year-old leader to pursue better treatment.

On Saturday, Home Minister Khan had said the government may consider the release of Khaleda on parole for treatment.

Hours later, the Awami League joint-general secretary ruled out the possibility of her parole.
