The prison for female inmates at Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj is all set to house Khaleda Zia.

The BNP chairperson will be shifted straight to the Keraniganj prison, not the old jailhouse on Nazimuddin Road, once her treatment at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University is over, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal says.

“She was kept at the old jailhouse as the women’s prison at Keraniganj was not ready. The prison is ready now. So she can be kept there,” the home minister said when asked at the Secretariat on Tuesday.

The old jailhouse will undergo repairs now, according to the minister.

She was put to the old jailhouse as the lone inmate after being convicted of corruption in February last year. She is serving 17 years in two cases.

The BNP had alleged the damp building at the old jailhouse was causing the 73-year-old former prime minister’s health to worsen. It also expressed concern after a fire claimed dozens of lives in buildings a few hundred yards from the old jail.

She has been undergoing treatment at the BSMMU since Apr 1. Four days before she was moved to the hospital, the home minister said the government was thinking about shifting her to another prison.

The law, justice and parliamentary affairs ministry issued a notice for transferring a court trying Khaleda to Keraniganj from Nazimuddin Road, Anti-Corruption Commission lawyer Mosharraf Hossain Kazol said on Monday.
